Fund Raising Volunteer
Volunteering at Bluebell Wood gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to children and families who need our help. As well as making a difference to others, you’ll find it rewarding for yourself.
If you join the Bluebell Wood team you’ll be provided with training, support and guidance. As well as making sure we pay you back for your travel expenses when volunteering, we’re also able to contribute towards lunch costs. We love to recognise and celebrate our volunteers. We hold volunteer social events throughout the year, and give out Long Service Awards when you reach milestones with us. We want your volunteer role to work for you too. In our 2023 volunteer survey, 100% of volunteers said we were flexible about how much time they give to their volunteer role, and 96% of volunteers said they’d recommend volunteering for Bluebell Wood!
No matter how you choose to support us, you’ll be a valued member of the team.
“I’ve met some wonderful people and experienced some once in a lifetime moments…However, the best thing about volunteering has always been knowing that it makes a difference, in some small way, to the lives of the children and families the Hospice cares for. It has been a very rewarding experience.” – Bluebell Wood Volunteer
Fundraising Volunteer
Haven’t got lots of free time but fancy volunteering at occasional events for a brilliant cause? We’re looking for enthusiastic individuals to help at events organised by the Bluebell Wood fundraising team. Every event is different, but you’ll usually be helping with things like: selling merchandise and raffle tickets, running games, bucket collecting and marshalling at sporting events.
You might find this role suits you if:
- You want to volunteer but can’t make a regular commitment. This is an ad-hoc role so it’s great for people who want to volunteer but don’t have lots of time. You can choose to volunteer as little or as often as you like, volunteering around your other commitments like work or study.
- You’re free to volunteer on occasional weekends, bank holidays or some evenings. This is when most of our events are run.
- You’re a friendly person who enjoys talking to people.
- You want to do a role that makes a difference. It costs around £5 million a year to run the Hospice, so we rely on our events volunteers to help raise vital funds so we can continue to be there for families who need us.
“The staff at Bluebell Wood are so friendly, positive and welcoming. As a young volunteer, I felt nervous about joining a team who were far more experienced than I was but on my first day [at an event], I was made to feel like I belonged – my ideas and efforts are always valued. The staff inspire me a lot and I learn so much from them.” – Isha, Events & Fundraising

Pet Foster Carer
Do you love pets? Would you like to be part of an amazing team caring for pets and helping them find their “furever” home? Then pet foster caring might be for you. Every year we help thousands of pets. Our Pet Foster Carers ensure we do that in the best way, providing comfortable warm homes and lots of love to pets in need. We’ve been helping homeless, sick and injured pets since 1897 and with your help we can continue to do that.
We know the best place for pets is in a loving home. Sometimes they can’t stay in their original home, or perhaps they are one of the many babies born in Blue Cross care. As a Blue Cross Foster Carer you’ll provide the loving home our pets need, giving care and affection to animals whilst they wait for their forever home. Our Foster Carers care for cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, chinchillas, rats and degus. Some of our Foster Carers look after all species, some specialise and, with further training, can also help us to care for pets with specialist needs.
What you will be doing-
- Caring for Blue Cross pets and providing them with a safe environment in your own home until they can be rehomed
- Supporting pets who might be struggling to cope in a Rehoming Centre
- Transporting your foster pet to and from a Blue Cross site or vets as required
- Providing all the care they need including feeding, socialising, grooming and cleaning
- Giving observations and feedback on your foster pet including filling in assessments, diaries and feedback forms
- Sending progress updates to your manager using video or photographs some of which will be used on our website and for potential adopters
The skills you need-
- Previous experience of handling and caring for pets. We can train you on any species new to you.
- Time to dedicate towards socialising and caring for your foster pet
- Access to a car to undertake journeys to and from our Rehoming Centre and vets
- A safe, quiet area within your home so pets can settle in at their own pace
- Willingness to learn and follow Blue Cross procedures and undertake training provided
- The ability to provide timely and regular communication with our foster teams through phone or email
- Some IT skill would be helpful, or someone who could support you, as much of our training is completed online and we’d like you to be able to email us photos, videos and updates of your foster pet
What’s in it for you?
- You’ll be making a difference to pets and giving them the best chance of finding a new home
- You’ll have all the joy of a pet without the long-term commitment of pet ownership
- Blue Cross pay all expenses related to caring for your foster pet including travel costs
- You’ll gain practical skills, experience, and access to a dedicated Blue Cross ARK training programme
- You’ll join a great team of like-minded people

About Action House
Over the last fifteen years, we have developed our services and our remit to work with a variety of complex and specialist groups of vulnerable people: such as those with substance misuse, mental illness, victims of abuse, and young people. In addition to helping people secure and maintain accommodation, we also facilitate personal development; access to other services and opportunities; support and opportunity to find meaningful occupation, and overall to help people change their lives for the better: reducing the cycle of hopelessness, risky behaviour, and homelessness.
Action’s ethos is to work holistically with each individual customer. We focus on their strengths and aspirations, involve them in decisions and ensure that they lead in the development of their support plans. We always aim to work in partnership with other agencies, seeking to minimise the disruption and intrusiveness of repeated interventions and information gathering, whilst ensuring customer safety. Designed to recognise the emotional journeys and enormous achievements that customers make in overcoming significant disadvantage, our motto is ‘Enabling our customers to achieve extraordinary things’.
Role- Cook / Healthy living / Life skills
What may you be asked to do-
- Run cooking classes and healthy living and life skill classes in the resource and Kitchen area, to people aged 18 – 24 in Newbold.
