Are you an enthusiastic volunteer looking for a new role where your work will really make a difference? Could you support an energetic local charity to reach new clients and volunteers?
Read Easy Sheffield is a successful local charity that provides free, confidential, one to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading, affiliated to national charity Read Easy UK. We are currently looking to expand our work and for this we need some more volunteers to join our friendly management team, and we excited to be seeking a new Publicity Officer.
Publicity Officer is a vital and interesting role within the Read Easy Sheffield team to lead on the marketing and publicity of the Sheffield group. This will involve running social media accounts, creating posters and other graphics, and proactively seeking opportunities to promote our work.
This voluntary position will suit someone who has an interest in marketing and communications, enjoys social media, and can help to champion what we do. You’ll need to be enthusiastic and self-motivated, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and able to write compelling communications. The main focuses of our publicity include reaching new readers, advertising volunteer roles, fundraising campaigns and advocating for our charitable work.
What you will be doing?
- Working with the team to decide on the group’s publicity needs.
- Creating content for your group’s page on the Read Easy website.
- Setting up and maintaining the group’s Facebook page and other social media platforms to raise your group’s profile.
- Organising the printing and placement of posters, leaflets, and other publicity materials.
- Identifying any specific opportunities for publicity in the local media.
- Attending Management Team meetings, once per month.
The role is flexible and mainly home-based so you can choose your own hours – you might spend around 2 hours a week on this. To get the most from the role, we would hope all Management Team members would support Read Easy Sheffield for at least one year.
The impact our work is down to advertising volunteer roles, reaching out to new readers and advocating for what we do – so you will play an instrumental part in making sure our group continues to thrive!

Skills required
- An interest in publicity/marketing.
- Good communication skills, particularly with writing.
- Experience using social media
- Reasonable confidence in using IT.
- The ability to use initiative and work independently.
- A willingness to abide by Read Easy policies and procedures.
- An open attitude that encourages two-way communication and willingness to ask for and offer support to the Team.
- Energy and enthusiasm with an average of two hours a week to commit to the role.
