Barrow Hill Roundhouse –
Barrow Hill Roundhouse is a unique museum and events venue situated in thevillage of Barrow Hill, just outside Chesterfield. It welcomes over 25,000 visitors a year, from around the UK and all over the world. The Roundhouse Shop is the first point of contact for the majority of those visitors so the most important requirements for undertaking the role are a happy, smiling face and an ability to interact in a friendly and welcoming way with people from all walks of life.
An interest in history and the railways is welcome but not mandatory. There are plenty of people at the Roundhouse who can provide responses to the more detailed questions that are asked. Prior experience of using a till and credit card machine and beginning and end of day money processing is helpful but again not mandatory as full training will be provided.
The Roundhouse is open to the public from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturdays and Sundays from the first weekend in March until mid-December. Volunteers can work either a morning shift (9.30am to 1.00pm), an afternoon shift (12.45pm to 4.15pm) or an all-day shift. There is a Shop rota which all the volunteers have access to in order to book shifts.
The Shop volunteers are also encouraged to assist with stewarding and car park marshalling at our events (Open Days, Galas and Special Events).
It is a requirement of volunteering at Barrow Hill Roundhouse that all volunteers should also be members of Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society.
