Derbyshire Police Community Speed Watch (CSW) volunteers are trained residents who conduct high-visibility monitoring of vehicle speeds in local communities to improve road safety and educate drivers. Volunteers use approved, hand-held devices to record speeding vehicles, sending details to the CREST Derbyshire team to send warning letters to offenders. This proactive, volunteer-led approach aims to curb speeding and reduce traffic accidents.

Key Aspects of the Role

  • Monitoring Vehicles – Activity: Conducting high-visibility checks (often in pairs or small groups) using approved speed detection devices.
  • Recording Data: Noting the registration number, make, and color of vehicles exceeding the speed limit.
  • Targeting: Focusing on locations where community concerns regarding speeding have been raised.
  • Objective: To serve as a deterrent and educate drivers, rather than directly issuing fines.
  • Support: Volunteers are trained and supported by Derbyshire Constabulary Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT).
  • Commitment: The role is not usually onerous, requiring just a few hours a week.
